Aged and frail in appearance, he sat alone hunched over his pile of books and scrolls. Scattered about his work surface, torn remnants of ancient writings rested in arm's reach should he have need of them in his ongoing studies.
His keen blue eyes devoured the tomes of long forgotten incantations. Their misty depths shining brightly with a contained power of grand proportions. His body a deceptive representation, for the power he wielded was great and grew by the hour. His lips moved in silent syllables as he memorized the words of power and adapted some to achieve his desired effects. For in his capable grasp the magics of the lands were always adapting and evolving into something greater. With each wave of his gnarled fingers the weave of essence growing more potent.
His current concentration was seized on a rare volume of the secrets of the ancient genie kin. Forgotten by the Jinn who had forsaken much to achieve mortal flesh, the ancient teachings to him were fascinating. He nodded thoughtfully to himself as he slowly turned pages, understanding coursing through his veins as the most basic concepts began to slowly fit into place under his meticulous study.
Dipping a quill into ink he began to make notes and calculations. Words of power altered slightly to best achieve his designed results. Quick illustrations of symbols that could harness this new found source of touching the living weave and bend it to his commands. And through his studies dawns broke and dusks fell and without knowing years passed while he scrutinized the old secrets. With the volume dissected and understood he looked from his desk and glanced around. Incredulously he noted the passing of time.
With a low chuckle at being lost in thought so long, he shrugged slowly and reached for another book. His fingers tracing the golden letters eagerly, 'Dimensional Gateways: A Prelimary Study'. How long had this little treasure been lost? He could not even begin to guess. But he had found it and its theories and musings were now his to enjoy. Grabbing some spectacles from the clutter, he settled in to study.
